November 2024 CarbonBetter® Impact Update
Every month we share the positive impact our customers have made through their use of CarbonBetter-certified 100% energy, which is included in every Provision clean energy supply plan. Each customer on these plans receives an email with their personal impact for the month, and this blog post reflects the impact all of our customers have made together since we became CarbonBetter-certified in October 2020.
We’re honored to be able to provide affordable clean energy that makes a real difference. Check out all of our past Impact Updates here!

Want to be included in our next impact update?
It’s easy to contribute to the positive impact we make each month. All Provision energy plans include CarbonBetter clean energy, which helps you make a difference automatically when you use energy at home.
Our customers help fund clean energy generation through renewable energy certificates, offset carbon through carbon credits, and plant trees to aid in reforestation and increase our natural carbon-capturing capabilities. It’s never too late to start using your energy for good.
November 2024 Featured Project: Coffee County Sanitary Landfill Gas Collection System

About the Project
The Coffee County Sanitary Landfill Gas Collection System, located in Alabama, USA, is an innovative landfill gas capture and combustion initiative. By utilizing blowers and an open flare system, the project collects and destroys methane, a potent greenhouse gas, reducing emissions effectively. Between 2014 and 2015, the project verified reductions of 50,260 metric tons of CO₂-equivalent (CO₂e), showcasing its contribution to environmental sustainability. Registered with the Climate Action Reserve (CAR), this initiative underscores the effectiveness of voluntary carbon credit markets in encouraging landfill gas mitigation systems where regulations do not mandate them.
How It Works
The system operates by installing landfill gas wells and using specialized equipment, including flow meters and gas analyzers, to extract and measure methane. Methane is then routed to an open flare where it is safely destroyed, minimizing its atmospheric release. To ensure precision, the facility follows strict calibration and QA/QC protocols, maintaining high standards for emission reductions.
Project Benefits
The Crow Lake Wind Emissions Reduction Project delivers multiple benefits:
- Environmental Benefits: By capturing and destroying methane, the project addresses a key source of greenhouse gases, reducing Coffee County’s carbon footprint significantly.
- Economic and Local Benefits: Income from selling verified greenhouse gas credits has enabled the expansion and maintenance of the system, which would have been financially infeasible without CAR’s offset program. This highlights the value of market-based incentives in supporting voluntary environmental projects.
- Scalability and Sustainability: The success of this project serves as a model for other non-regulated landfills, proving that carbon markets can drive sustainable practices even in regions with low electricity prices.
Conclusion
The Coffee County Sanitary Landfill Gas Collection System exemplifies the potential of voluntary carbon programs to catalyze environmental projects. By mitigating methane emissions and fostering sustainable practices, it aligns with global climate goals, making a measurable impact on reducing greenhouse gases while setting a precedent for other landfill operators.
