February 2025 CarbonBetter® Impact Update

Every month we share the positive impact our customers have made through their use of CarbonBetter-certified 100% energy, which is included in every Provision clean energy supply plan. Each customer on these plans receives an email with their personal impact for the month, and this blog post reflects the impact all of our customers have made together since we became CarbonBetter-certified in October 2020.

We’re honored to be able to provide affordable clean energy that makes a real difference. Check out all of our past Impact Updates here!

About the Project

The Rio Anapu-Pacajá REDD Project, located in the Pará region of Brazil, is a crucial initiative aimed at preventing deforestation and protecting biodiversity in the Amazon rainforest. REDD (Reducing Emissions from Deforestation and Forest Degradation) projects like this one help preserve vast forested areas by promoting sustainable land management and providing economic alternatives to deforestation.

The project covers over 164,000 hectares of land threatened by illegal logging and agricultural expansion. By implementing forest conservation strategies, the Rio Anapu-Pacajá project prevents carbon emissions that would otherwise be released through deforestation. Verified under the Verified Carbon Standard (VCS), this initiative plays a key role in global climate action efforts.

How It Works

The Rio Anapu-Pacajá REDD Project combats deforestation by:

  • Strengthening land tenure and monitoring to prevent illegal logging and land invasions.
  • Engaging local communities through sustainable agricultural programs, education, and employment opportunities that reduce dependence on deforestation-based income.
  • Protecting biodiversity, preserving habitats for countless species that rely on the Amazon rainforest.
  • Generating verified carbon credits, allowing businesses and individuals to offset their emissions while directly supporting conservation efforts.
Project Benefits

The impact of this REDD initiative extends beyond carbon sequestration:

  • Climate Benefits: By preventing deforestation, the project avoids the release of millions of tons of CO₂-equivalent emissions, supporting international climate goals.
  • Community Benefits: Local communities gain access to new economic opportunities, including sustainable farming, agroforestry, and ecotourism, reducing reliance on deforestation for survival.
  • Biodiversity Conservation: The project helps safeguard one of the most ecologically diverse regions in the world, home to thousands of plant and animal species.
Conclusion

The Rio Anapu-Pacajá REDD Project exemplifies how carbon offset programs can drive real-world conservation while providing economic benefits to local communities. By protecting the Amazon rainforest, this project contributes to global carbon reduction goals and ensures a healthier planet for future generations.
