Provision’s 2024 Impact Recap

As we head into the new year, we are so grateful for our customers and our team for making it possible to create such a positive impact by using Provision’s CarbonBetter® energy supply.

Home energy use accounts for roughly 20% of greenhouse gas emissions in the United States (PNAS, 2020), but Provision customers are working to change that. In this post, we’ll recap the highlights of the impact we’ve made together in 2024.

How Our Customers Make a Difference – Automatically

Before we review our customers’ impact in 2024, let’s review how Provision customers can make a positive impact every time they use energy at home:

Clean Energy

You fund clean energy generation when we match 100% of your power usage with RECs.

Reduce Carbon

You reduce carbon released when we offset 100% of your natural gas usage with carbon credits.

Plant Trees

You plant trees that will capture carbon as you use energy. This is using energy for good.

For each area, impact is calculated based on our customers’ billings in the impact month, but planting, funding, and offsetting may not happen in that month. These activities must align with planting seasons and project life cycles to be effective.

How Much Renewable Electricity Provision Customers Have Funded

Provision customers have funded 154,307 kWh of clean energy generation since October 2020! That’s enough to power over 16,000 homes for an entire year!

Renewable Energy Credits Explained

100% renewable electricity is included automatically in every Provision electricity supply plan, and we use renewable energy certificates, or RECs, to deliver on our clean energy promise.

Homes are connected to the power grid by transmission lines, and the electricity that’s supplied is derived from a variety of generation resources, both renewable and non-renewable. This is because when clean energy is generated and put on the grid, it’s mixed with other fuel sources there, making it difficult for environmentally conscious consumers to supply their homes with 100% clean energy.

Provision customers ensure more clean energy is put on the grid by funding renewable generators through the purchase of RECs. Provision carefully selects projects like those featured in this 2024 Impact Update to ensure that the steps we take today help build a better future.

Here are details about a few of the projects we supported in 2024.

Provision enhances its impact by purchasing Renewable Energy Certificates (RECs) and carbon offsets, demonstrating a commitment to a cleaner, more sustainable future.

Phlogiston Phase I N2O Abatement

The Phlogiston Phase I N2O Abatement project at the Ascend Materials Plant in Cantonment, Florida, is a critical effort to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. Registered with the Climate Action Reserve (CAR), the project captures nitrous oxide (N2O)—a greenhouse gas with 273 times the global warming potential of CO2—using a new absorption column. By preventing these emissions, the initiative significantly contributes to global warming mitigation.

Shaan Seet Improved Forest Management Project

The Shaan Seet Improved Forest Management (IFM) project on Prince of Wales Island, Alaska, is a vital initiative in forest conservation and carbon offsetting. Verified in 2019, it protects over 8,900 acres of old-growth hemlock-spruce forest, crucial for carbon sequestration and ecosystem services. Once used for subsistence and timber, the land is now sustainably managed by Shaan Seet, Inc., an Alaska Native corporation. Part of the CarbonBetter Certified Offset (CBCO) Portfolio 22-1, this project is supported by Provision’s purchase of carbon offsets, advancing sustainability goals.

Raura Hydro Electric Power Project

The Raura Hydro Electric Power Project in Himachal Pradesh, India, is a key contributor to renewable energy and environmental sustainability. Owned by DLI Power India Private Limited, this small run-of-river hydroelectric plant reduces fossil fuel reliance while minimizing environmental impact. Part of the CarbonBetter Certified Offset (CBCO) Portfolio 22-1, it supplies clean energy to the regional grid and delivers significant environmental benefits, making it this month’s Featured Project.

Orange Mill – Turbine Generator #1

The Orange Mill – Turbine Generator #1 Project generates renewable energy by converting biomass into electricity. Powered by biomass boilers using organic waste like wood chips and bark, the facility operates a 40 MW GE steam turbine generator. Steam from the boilers drives the turbine, producing clean electricity for the grid, promoting sustainability and waste reduction.

OREG I – CS-9

This month’s featured project is Ormat Technologies’ OREG I – CS-9, an innovative waste heat recovery initiative in the United States. Using Recovered Energy Generation (REG) units, the project captures waste heat from industrial processes and converts it into electricity for onsite use or sale to the grid. This effort reduces carbon emissions and aligns with global sustainability goals, showcasing Ormat’s leadership in renewable energy solutions.

Renewable Solar Power Project by Adani Green Energy Limited

This month’s featured project is Adani Green Energy Limited’s 940 MW Renewable Solar Power Project, spanning four Indian states. The initiative generates clean electricity, replacing fossil-fuel-based grid power and advancing India’s decarbonization goals.
